I'll start by saying that I am not an electrician but I am pretty handy and I often do my own electrical work. My project required some extra work to install these lights because my kitchen has custom built-in light alcoves. These lights would be an easy drop-in replacement for an existing fluorescent troffer. So I had to build racks to support the lights in the alcoves. I used 1/2 inch aluminum angle to do this which worked great. Then I dropped in one of the lights to give it a test run to see how it looked and how the remote (purchased separately) worked. I hooked it up to the existing light switch. As soon as I turned it on I realized that these lights were bright so I was glad they were dimmable. So I started playing around with the remote to dim the lights and change the color between 3000k to 5000k and anywhere in between. What I noticed is that the color change would hold the last setting when turned off and then on using the existing light switch, perfect. Then I noticed that the dimming would not hold the last setting. It always reverted back to full brightness. Since they were too bright at full brightness I decided to install a new 0-10 volt dimmer so that I could set the max brightness that would be the same every time the lights were turned off and on. In the end it worked out great but I was unfamiliar this type of dimmer. First, 0-10 volt dimmers need low voltage control wires in addition to the 120 volt power supply. In many cases this would mean that control wires would have to be pulled through the wall to the new dimmer switch that would replace one of the existing wall switches. I had a easier solution that worked out great since my lights were in a open alcove that I could access easily with a ladder. So I just left the existing three way switches in place and installed the new 0-10 volt dimmer up in the alcove in a junction box inline before the lights. I only had to run the control wires from the new dimmer around the alcove to each of the new light panels. I used four of these 1x4 LED flat panels on one dimmer. Now I have the preferred max brightness set at the new dimmer switch and I still have full control over the color and further dimming using the remote. There is a 1/2 second delay when we turn the lights on at any of the wall switches. There is zero delay if you leave the switches on and just use the remote for on and off. I couldn't be happier with the end results after installing these new flat panel lights and the 0-10 volt dimmer. I think the power savings should be more that 50% since I no longer have eight florescent ballasts powering up every time I turn my kitchen lights on. And on top of that they are dimmed about 75%.
