Can you replace a fluorescent tube with a LED tube? Does the ballast need to be removed to use an LED bulb?

Yes, it is possible to replace a traditional fluorescent tube with an LED tube. LED tubes offer a number of advantages over traditional fluorescent tubes, including longer lifetimes, using less energy, and better light quality. Additionally, LED tubes are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, making them easy to fit into existing fixtures.

Before replacing a standard fluorescent tube with an LED tube, the type of LED that will work for the fixture that the tubes will be replacing as most fixtures include a ballast for the fluorescents that are currently installed. Three are four different types of LED Tubes including Type A, Type B, Type A+B, and Type C. Each type is explained below:

Type A LED Tubes:

Type A LED tubes are the most common type of LED tube. They are compatible with existing fluorescent fixtures and require no additional wiring or ballasts. They are available in a variety of sizes, making them perfect for any lighting application. These tubes offer good energy savings, long lifespans, and increased safety compared to fluorescent tubes.

Type B LED Tubes or "Direct Wire":

Type B LED tubes are also known as “direct wire” LED tubes and are not ballast compatible. They are wired directly to the line voltage or the power source and require no ballasts or starters. The ballast needs to be disconnected and removed before the LED tube is installed. Type B tubes often require non-shunted socket configurations as well. They are more efficient than Type A LED tubes, offering even greater energy savings. They also have a longer lifespan, making them a more cost-effective solution.

Type A+B LED Tubes:

Type A+B LED tubes are a combination of Type A and Type B LED tubes. They offer the same advantages as both types but require no additional wiring or ballasts. They are the most efficient and cost-effective option when replacing fluorescent tubes. Always be sure to check the ballast compatibility on the LED tube when using as Type A with this application.

Type C LED Tubes:

Type C LED tubes require an external LED driver for operation rather than the existing ballast. A LED driver must be purchased with these tubes to ensure compatibility during installation and bypass the ballast, eliminating compatibility issues and maintenance costs. The remote LED driver allows for controllable dimming with any 0-10V dimmer, allowing you to adjust the wattage to increase or decrease the lumen output.

Plug and Play LED Tubes have made news in recent years!
